Robert Garry, ex-military officer, wants nothing more than to maintain his integrity and his team's safety despite a career change to pirate leader, but a cargo freighter he targets proves to be holding much more than he bargained for.

Will he escape with his own life, let alone the lives of his crew?

He has always shunned the 'folk hero' label but is he in danger of becoming an arch villain in the process?

And Here the Wheel (Audible Audio Edition) John Harper Scott Ainslie Fantastic Books Audio Books

Book's not bad, but I feel like the plot has some dangling holes in it, even early on. Some of the grammar irks me just so, and the setting changes often but doesn't really paint the surroundings out, but proceeds bit by bit, making it hard to get a clear picture of what. Sometimes the characters will act pretty inconsistently for what seems to only be to create a short-term conflict. And there's a lot of spelling errors when it comes to double letters; Gunn and Garry are sometimes just "Gun" and "Gary" which is pretty distracting.

It's not unreadable, and the story is interesting, but it kind of meanders. The biggest thing for me, really, was the straight jump-in to aspects to aspects of the universe which aren't really in the game setting yet (even after two years). I think that it took too bold a liberty with story, which bumps it from "interesting insight" to jump outside of canon.

And Here the Wheel (Audible Audio Edition) John Harper Scott Ainslie Fantastic Books Audio Books Reviews

Very engaging novel set in the Elite universe and chronicling the exploits and adventures of Robert Garry, Federal officer-turned pirate-turned would be savior of humanity and his unlikely companion Gunn-Britt who has spent her entire life hunting and killing pirates. there are some intriguing reveals into the history of the Elite Pilots Federation and other key elements of the Elite universe. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their adventures in the future!
I'm not really one might call a seasoned reviewer, I won't use words like 'trope' or delve into detailed analysis of writing style in the school of <insert writing school>. I like a good story and I like to be entertained.

Even if you're not familiar with the online game "And Here the Wheel" is a good sci-fi story and well worth the cost, definitely give it a read.

If you are familiar with the game I strongly encourage any one interested in lore to give it a read. If you're familiar with the game and some of the older lore you'll even more context for the world in which it takes place, which won't make the book better or worse but you will be more immersed in the story.

Personally I think John's done an excellent job of capturing the heart and soul of ED, the broad scope of the galaxy, the literal wheels within wheels turning behind the scenes and the frequent change of pace from leisurely contemplating the politics and motives of the various parties to the frenetic "Oh god we're all going to die" pace of combat.
The book has a few rough patches (the "car chase"), but overall is excellent both as a general sci-fi book and especially as an Elite Dangerous book. The story is self contained and complete, but a sequel continuing the story would be very welcome. Heck even a prequel about the 'split' or what happened after with Neptune and/or Oberon would be awesome.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book, and we all know reviews are usually a binary minefield of 1s and 5s, but the recommendation came from a good friend and the cover nudged my imagination. The next few days of reading found me entirely unprepared for the impressive quality of writing and whirlwind of action. It was not uncommon for me to set the book down, crunch up my face in thought while mentally processing the completed chapter, only to pick the book right back up because there were questions I wanted answers to!

That's the core of what you should know about this book, dear reader. The writing is plenty palatable and the action almost as non-stop as the mystery, but the most striking aspect is how relatable the characters are. There are nuances to these individuals that through either a phrase or minor action, on more than a dozen occasions, seem to mimic individuals in my life with terrific fondness. The little things, like if your father was finishing hotdogs with a bottle of ketchup, when suddenly that near-empty bottle hits a pocket of air and makes an embarrassing noise. What's your father say? Hits you with a Dadjoke of, "Excuse me, whew." - bet you can see you mother rolling her eyes, can't you?

That's what Mr. Harper did so well with his characters, a lot of relatable, tiny, instances that make them feel human. However, there are times when the behavioral scale seemed to go off the charts and you were left with a mild cringe on your face; the rare occasions when the responses of characters were a bit over the top but the social situation seemed to acknowledge it as something far less extreme. You my find yourself asking, "Am I taking crazy pills? None of the characters seemed to respond to that disproportionate outburst in a way that makes sense." I assure you, dear reader, you are not (nor should you. Stop that. Get some help.)

Apart from the rare, disjointed, behavior the book was a real treat to read and left me with a set of characters that I would love to read more of. If you enjoy Elite Dangerous and want to see some of the finer Federation, Alliance, and Empire lore? It's a worthy choice.

Remember...
Pros
-The action is solid and always ever present in the book. In this particular read there was never a time I had to think “man I wish something would happen”.
-The story is complex, with multiple factions taking part in the plot, I actually didn’t know how it would turn out or who would be the next player present on the stage. Kudos for that.

Cons
-The characters, while not being flat, are not really fleshed out either. The main character Robert in fact seemed wanting for an internal conflict. While the author gave him an internal conflict of sorts, it also seemed so.... lacking. Guilt over a past incident suddenly guides him to commit further murder as a pirate. I couldn’t help but dislike the character after some time, as he tried to portray himself as a dashing rogue for half the book. But frankly I found myself wishing he’d get offed and one of the other minor characters would develop more. All other characters in the book seem to serve as a backdrop only for Robert.

Overall it’s a pretty solid Sci-fi entry and packed on action. Character development is limited, but it was fun reading about the fights and ship to ship combat!
